Lake Tahoe, November 23, 1998: Resort Records Inc. today announced support for MP3 audio providing music for purchase and retrieval from the companys web site. Rivaling CD quality sound, customers may store and play individual MP3 musical tracks on a computer or handheld MP3 music player, or with appropriate hardware -- create a disc for playback in conventional CD players.
The companys strategy challenges warnings from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) that MP3 is the format of choice among Internet music pirates and that, without a copy-protection scheme, is unsuitable for commercial use. Regardless, several hardware manufacturers from the comparatively booming computer industry have stepped in to produce portable MP3 music players -- legitimizing the format for average consumers.
Resort Records President and CEO, David Delbridge responds; MP3 the first freely available audio file format to allow for quality music distribution over the Internet has instigated a revolution. Though imperfect, MP3 completes our all-Internet business model and will only get better. The fact that major labels are afraid of this new technology presents an additional opportunity for early adopters; namely, independent labels like our own. If majors wont provide the music to this growing audience, we certainly will.
