| What is MP3? |
| MP3 (MPEG 1, Layer 3) is a "lossy" audio compression standard governed by the Motion Picture Experts Group. Unlike "lossless" compression algorithms, MP3 discards inaudible data for space, resulting in very small music files that retain most of their original fidelity, but can be downloaded quickly from Internet web sites and stored in a small space.
In general, uncompressed CD audio data consumes ten to twelve times the space of MP3-compressed audio files. Likewise, MP3 files are downloaded ten times faster -- 3 minutes, instead of 30, for example. |
